Laurie L. Shinn, M.D.
Camille Haisley-Royster, M.D.
Dr. Camille Haisley-Royster has been happy to be a part of the Commonwealth Dermatology team since 2003. She received her medical degree and dermatology residency training at Duke University and enjoys caring for patients with general dermatology concerns, skin cancer and hair loss.
Matthew Sage, M.D.
Dr. Sage specializes in medical and cosmetic dermatology. He received a Bachelor of Science degree with departmental honors from the University of Richmond and earned his medical degree from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
He completed his internship in internal medicine at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA, and his dermatology residency at the Weill-Cornell Medical College of Cornell University in New York, NY.
He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and has numerous publications. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, biking, and reading.
Sarah Skillman, M.D.
Dr. Sarah Skillman completed her undergraduate studies in biology and microbiology at the University of Georgia, graduating magna cum laude with honors. She earned her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.
As a dermatology resident, she served as chief resident and she was awarded the Cleveland Francoeur Outstanding Dermatology Resident of the Year award. She then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Dermatology at Indiana University School of Medicine.
Dr. Skillman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and a member of the Society of Pediatric Dermatology and of the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance.
Neel Nath, M.D.
Dr. Nath attributes his affable smile and demeanor to his formative years in Des Moines, Iowa. He left those frigid plains for Durham, NC, where he completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at Duke University. He remained at Duke for dermatology residency and has been with Commonwealth Dermatology since September 2022. He is interested in medical and surgical dermatology and enjoys taking the time to get to know his patients.
Hazel Vernon, M.D. (Urgent Clinic)
Dr. Hazel Vernon was the first practicing dermatologist in Central Virginia to earn pediatric dermatology board certification status and has been an integral part of Commonwealth Dermatology since 1989. She is recognized by her peers as a Top Doc in Dermatology by Richmond Magazine and Virginia Living Magazine.
Dr. Vernon is a board-certified member of the American Board of Dermatology for general dermatology with the majority of her patient care focusing on pediatric dermatology.
Rachel Lee, M.D.
Dr. Rachel Lee received her Bachelor of Science with university honors from Virginia Commonwealth University, then remained at VCU to earn her medical degree and complete her dermatology residency. She served as chief resident during her final year of training.
Dr. Lee enjoys being able to provide her patients with the full spectrum of services in dermatology, including medical, surgical and cosmetic management. She has particular clinical interest in management of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS).
Recognized as an HS Specialty Provider by the HS Foundation, Dr. Lee is able to guide patients through a wide array of options for optimal management of their condition, including lifestyle changes, medication management, in-office surgical procedures, and access to clinical trials in the Central Virginia region. Professionally, Dr. Lee is also committed to educating the next generation of dermatologists and serves as an affiliate faculty member for the VCU Department of Dermatology.
Outside of work, Dr. Lee has a passion for the arts, road running, and traveling the world with her husband and daughter.
Darren Guffey, MD, FAAD, FACMS
Director of Mohs Surgery
After completing a BS in Health and Exercise Science at Wake Forest University Dr. Guffey attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He subsequently completed an internship in Internal Medicine and residency in Dermatology at the University of Virginia (UVA). Guffey continued his training at UVA where he completed an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology under Dr. Mark Russell.
Dr. Guffey spent 3 years as a faculty member at UVA where he served as associate program director for the Mohs Surgery fellowship. During his time at UVA he received awards for patient satisfaction and was nominated for the Mulholland teaching award.
Dr Guffey is board certified in Dermatology as well as Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (Mohs surgery). He is a fellow member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American College of Mohs Surgery.
Happily married with two young boys, Guffey grew up on a poultry farm in a rural community in North Carolina. Today, he spends his free time mountain biking and watching college and professional sports.
Jessica Payne, M.D.
Dr. Jessica Payne is a native of the Richmond area. She completed medical school and dermatology residency at Virginia Commonwealth University where she served as chief resident in her final year. Her clinical interests include medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. She joined Commonwealth Dermatology in August, 2024 and provide a wide breadth of services to the community she loves.
Ana S. Wiley, NP
Ana S. Wiley, Nurse Practitioner, has joined Commonwealth Dermatology after 10 years of nursing experience in the Department of Dermatology at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is board certified as a Nurse practitioner, graduating with a Masters degree in the Science of Nursing from Maryville University, where she was a member of Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society.
She earned her Bachelors Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University where she was a member of the Golden Key Honor Society. She is a member of the Dermatology Nurses Association and serves on the board of directors for the Dermatology Nurse Certification Board.
Ana and her husband have a daughter. Ana has a passion for medical missions and has traveled to Africa and Jamaica.
Mary Graves, PA-C
Mary Graves is a board-certified Physician Assistant who returns to the Richmond area and joins Commonwealth Dermatology after working the last several years in Northern Virginia. Mary received her Bachelors of Science from Virginia Tech after graduating with honors with a degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise and a minor in Leadership and Social Change. She then pursued her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies at Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, Virginia. She brings with her previous dermatology experience focused on medical dermatology.
She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants. Outside of work, Mary enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter and their dog.
Sam Martin, NP
Sam Martin is a board-certified Nurse Practitioner who joins Commonwealth Dermatology with several years of experience in Dermatology. Sam graduated Magna Cum Laude from Virginia Tech with a degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise. She went on to pursue her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing as well as her Master’s degree in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with both degrees.
Sam is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Her primary focus is medical dermatology. Outside of work, Sam enjoys spending time with her family and friends, being outdoors, and attending Hokie football games.
Kirsten Yezzi, PA-C
Kirsten Yezzi is a board-certified physician assistant joining Commonwealth Dermatology with five years of dermatology experience. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise from Virginia Tech, graduating Summa Cum Laude with honors. She then graduated from James Madison University with a Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree.
She is a certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants. Kirsten is skilled in performing thorough skin examinations and maintains a focus on medical dermatology. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outside with her husband, son, and dog,Juniper.
Lauren Shutt, PA-C
Lauren Shutt is a board-certified physician assistant, born and raised in the Richmond area. She joins Commonwealth Dermatology after practicing for over 9 years in the dermatology field. Lauren received her Bachelor of Science from Virginia Tech with a degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise with a minor in business. She then pursued her Master of Physician Assistant Studies at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. She brings with her previous dermatology experience focused on medical dermatology, especially skin cancer screenings and early skin cancer detection.
Lauren is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She is also a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants. Outside of work, Lauren enjoys exercise classes, any chance to travel, and most especially spending time with her husband, three daughters and their two yorkies – Charlotte and Ralph.
Hazle Konerding, M.D., Emeritus
(In Memoriam)
Board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology, Dr. Konerding was recognized as a Top Doc in Dermatology by Richmond Magazine. She held numerous leadership roles, including Past President of the Richmond Academy of Medicine and the Medical Society of Virginia, and she served on the MSV Insurance Center Board of Directors as well as the Virginia AMA delegations. She also contributed to the American Academy of Dermatology and chaired Access Now, a virtual free clinic providing specialty medical care to underserved individuals in Central Virginia. In addition, she held leadership positions with Bon Secours Health System.
Dr. Konerding was deeply committed to community service, including involvement in Rotary and other local organizations. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, and four grandchildren. Her dedication to her patients, community, and family leaves a lasting legacy.
